Q1. Describe the types of data a video streaming service, like Netflix or Amazon, might capture about its viewers?

  • What day you watch content (Netflix has found people watch TV shows during the week and movies during the weekend.)
  • The date you watch the particular video last or recently watched ones
  • What time you watch content
  • What device you use to watch (Do you like to use your tablet for TV shows and your Roku for movies? Do people access the Just for Kids feature more on their iPads, etc.?)
  • The gener of the videos that you love to watch ie. action, romantic, sports, thriller. Based on this analytics they send us Recommended Videos or Videos that are similiar to this.
  • The ratings given (about 4 million per day). Whether you liked, Disliked and any comments added to the video.
  • When you pause and leave content (and if you ever come back)

Q2. Tucker proposes two conflicting ideas about the capability of an algorithm to measure the quality of an artistic work

  • First Conflicting Idea is if it takes less space in computer memory to solve a given problem, it doesnt guarantee that the Time required for execution is optimal. There are algorithms that may take less space for computation but their Time Complexity is high.
  • The Second conflicting idea is if we want to implement an already existing algorithm in a more efficient fashion (say, "better"=computationally more efficient), then we can compare the computational efficiency of our algorithm with those of alternative competing algorithms. But, if, we are aiming for a lower error (mean square error (MSE), for example), then we need appropriate metric of comparison could be the MSE (in this case, "better"=MSE). So, the metric used for comparison of algorithm need not always be same but it depends on the criteria used for computing which is always subjected to change.

Please let me know in case of any clarifications required. Thanks!
