1. An executive of a company “Perpetual Turbines” claims that his engineers have designed a steam turbine with the following parameters:
• inlet conditions: T = 500◦C and p = 6MPa;

• outlet conditions: p = 0.1MPa;

• work performed by the turbine per 1kg of steam is w = 1200kJ/kg;

• turbine is adiabatically isolated.

Evaluate:
(a) specific enthalpy at the inlet and outlet of the turbine;
(b) phase descriptions of the steam entering and leaving the turbine (e.g., superheated vapor, saturated vapor, saturated mixture, etc.);
(c) quality x of the steam leaving the turbine;
(d) specific entropy of the steam at the inlet and outlet of the turbine;
and
(e) based on your results, explain why the company “Perpetual Turbines” cannot be trusted.

    Homework 2 Problem 1: A piston-cylinder device initially contains 0.35-kg steam at 3.5 MPa, superheated by 7.4 C. Now the stream loses heat to the surroundings and the piston moves down, hitting a set of stops at which point the cylinder contains saturated liquid water. The cooling continues until the cylinder contains water at 200C. Determine (a) the final pressure and the quality (if mixture), (b) the boundary work, (c) the amount of heat transfer when the piston first hits...

    Q1 a)  Company A designed a heat pump to supply heat into a library in Canada during winter, so that the library can maintain to be at 20°C. The heat pump utilizes 12,000 L/min of Refrigerant-134a as the working fluid and absorb heat from an industrial water stream. The water stream enters the evaporator at 50°C and exits at 25°C. The refrigerant enters the evaporator at 10°C with 90% moisture content and leaves at 20°C. There is no pressure drop in...
