The "R" word: Recently there’s been a lot of attention being called to the “r”-word. That’s right – “ retard”. Not so long ago, a political commentator used the word in a tweet and has experienced a great deal of backlash from both sides of the argument. Some have said that it’s a clinical term and is denoting a lack of growth or slowness of development. Others have been offended by it, saying that it’s a derogatory term used to insult individuals with disabilities. What are your thoughts on it? Do you use it at all or do you mind when other people do? Do you see the word as a clinical term? Or do you see it as an insult?
The word "retard" is not derogatory in itself, but when it is used for discriminating and segregating the individuals with disabilities from others it becomes offensive word. The word "retard" or "retarded" should not be used for the people with disabilities.
