3. Venezuela 3 M barrels 4 M Barrels 120, 60 144,54108.48 135,45 Saudi Arabia 8 M barrels M barrels The numbers on the left represent Saudi Arabias profit, the numbers on the right represent Venezuelas. Each country has two choices of how much oil to produce, depending on the total amount of production their profits change. A. Determine the equilibrium of the above game. Does either country have dominant strategy? B. Is this a prisoners dilemma? Is it the best outcome for eith C. If the two countries created a monopoly which outcome would they choose?

Answer #1

a) when Saudi Arabia produces 8m barrels , Venezuela will maximise profit by producing 4mn barrels .

when Saudi Arabia produces 9m barrels , Venezuela will maximise profit by producing 4mn barrels

so producing 4mn barrel is dominant strategy for Venezuela .

similarly ,

when Venezuela produces 3m barrels , Saudi Arabia will maximise profit by producing 8mn barrels

when Venezuela produces 4m barrels , Saudi Arabia will maximise profit by producing 8mn barrels

so producing 8mn barrel is dominant strategy for Saudi Arabia .

equilibrium is when Saudi Arabia produces 8mn , and Venezuela produces 4 mn with payoff (120,60 )

b) yes this is a prisoner dilemma as the profits of the 2 nations are not maximised,

this is not the best outcome for Saudi Arabia as it could have earned higher profit by warning 144mn profit

but this is the best outcome for Venezuela as this is its maximum profit .

c) it they act as a monopolist , Saudi Arabia produce 8mn and Venezuela will produce 3mn , because the combine profits will be 200 which is more than 180 when 8mn by Saudi Arabia and 4 mn by Venezuela are produced .

In mid-2012, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela (both members of OPEC) produced an average of 8 million and 3 million barrels of oil a day, respectively. Production costs were about $20 per barrel, and the price of oil averaged $80 per barrel. Each country had the capacity to produce an extra 1 million barrels per day. At that time, it was estimated that each 1-million-barrel increase in supply would depress the average price of oil by $10. Fill in the missing...

Suppose OPEC has only two producers, Saudi Arabia and Nigeria. Saudi Arabia has far more oil reserves and is the lower cost producer compared to Nigeria. The payoff matrix in the table below shows the profits earned per day by each country. "Low output" corresponds to producing the OPEC assigned quota and "high output" corresponds to producing the maximum capacity beyond the assigned quota. Low Saudi Arabia's (SA) output Low High SA: $200M profit SA: $180M profit N: $15M profit...

Oil producing countries need to maintain the price of oil from decreasing, and for this reason they need to limit the total production of oil. Therefore, they try to maximize their profit by predicting the production level of other countries. Consider the following hypothetical situation, where Saudi Arabia and Venezuela get varying profit margins for the oil they produce. Venezuela can either produce 1M barrels per day or 2M barrels per day, while Saudi Arabia can produce 4M barrels per...

    3. A New York Times article (5/9/88) reported that according to the International Energy Agency "oil production by OPEC rose to 18.2 million barrels/day in April from 17.7 m. barrels in March." Part of this increase was attributed to Iraq's refusal to sign the group's production sharing program and its subsequent increase in output to 2.6 m. barrels/day. OPEC's other 12 members however cooperated with their agreements and produced close to their agreed upon quota. Suppose we could model this...
