A hollow cylinder and a solid cylinder have the same diameter. Determine which has the greater moment of inertia with respect to an axis of rotation along the axis of the cylinder.
Any help would be much appreciated, Thanks!
Moment of inertia is dependent on distance between mass and reference axis along which you calculate moment of inertia i.e. I=Mr2. If a hollow cylinder has same mass as that of a solid cylinder then we can say that the mass in solid cylinder is distributed close to the reference axis while for hollow cylinder mass whole mass is distributed at the farthest distance from axis of cylinder. So, moment of inertia of hollow cylinder is greater than that of solid cylinder.

Consider two right circular cones, cone A which is solid and cone B which is hollow and has mass only around the shell of the cone. Both cones have the same mass M , the same height H, and the same top radius R. Let the cone axes be along the y—axis with the tip at y=0 and the circular end at y=H. Which cone will have the largest moment of inertia?

What is the distance from axis about which a uniform, balsa-wood sphere will have the same moment of inertia as does a thin-walled, hollow, lead sphere of the same mass and radius R, with the axis along a diameter, to the center of the balsa-wood sphere?
The solid cylinder and cylindrical shell in the figure have the same mass, same radius, and turn on frictionless, horizontal axles. (The cylindrical shell has lightweight spokes connecting the shell to the axle.) A rope is wrapped around each cylinder and tied to a block. The blocks have the same mass and are held the same height above the ground. Both blocks are released simultaneously. Which hits the ground first? Or is it a tie? Must explain why The answer...
Lab 8 Assignment: Moment of Inertia 1) Moment of Inertia for Different Systems The resistance to rotational motion change is more involved than for linear motion because it not only depends on what the mass is, but also on how that mass is distributed about the axis of rotation. The farther away from the axis the mass is distributed, the greater the moment of inertia. Using this simple definition, for each of the following pairs of objects, determine which of...
A solid sphere and a hollow cylinder of the same mass and radius have a rolling race down an incline as in Example 13.9. They start at rest on an incline at a height habove a horizontal plane. The race then continues along the horizontal plane. The coefficient of rolling friction between each rolling object and the surface is the same. Both have mass M Both have radius R. Write an expression for the distances that each object will roll...
