A 65-year-old patient is 8 days post op after a total knee replacement. Patient suddenly complains of shortness of breath, pleuritic chest pain, and palpitations. On arrival to the emergency department, an EKG revealed new onset atrial fibrillation and right ventricular strain pattern – T wave inversions in the right precordial leads (V1-4) ± the inferior leads (II, III, aVF). Identify The cardiovascular and cardiopulmonary pathophysiologic processes that result in the patient presenting these symptoms. Address Any racial/ethnic variables that may impact physiological functioning. How do these processes interact to affect the patient?

Atrial fibrillation is an irregular and often rapid heart rate that can increase your risk of strokes, heart failure and other heart-related complications.

Possible causes of atrial fibrillation-

  • High blood pressure
  • Heart attack
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Abnormal heart valves
  • Heart defects you're born with (congenital)
  • An overactive thyroid gland or other metabolic imbalance etc..

Cardiovascular complication like atrial fibrillation is common after knee replacement surgery which Is observed by palpitations, fatigue and breath shortness along with dizziness and general weakness.

Along with cardiovascular complications due to advance age relates effects like GIT distress and urinary incontinence are faced frequently.

These complications may predisposition progress in a secondary infection.

The racial and ethical variables that may impact physiological functioning as this increases the chances of lack of awareness and knowledge regarding the health. People who are poorer and who have less education are more likely to suffer from diseases.

Shortness of breath, pleuritic chest pain and palpitations ( Rapid heartbeats) Are symptoms of cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases. Patient presenting symptoms suggest the cardiopulmonary pathophysiological process.
