CAN is Ceric ammonium nitrate, it has the following formula :-
(NH4)2[Ce(NO3)6]
It is a co-ordination compound, used to identify Alcohol functional groups in the given organic Compounds.
If the given compound is treated with CAN then the appearance of red or pink color indicates the presence of an Alcoholic functional group in that compound.
When 2-propanol is treated with CAN then a red-pink colored complex is formed with ammonium nitrate as a byproduct.
The complex formed is neutral in nature due to the removal of two moles of Ammonium nitrate. Complex is tetranitratotris-(2-propanol) cerium (IV).
