Z score tells us how many standard deviation a given score is away from mean

Z = (x - mean)/s.d

So, greater the z score, better the performance.

For example mean and standard deviation for maths exam is 90 and 5 respectively

And sam scored 95 in that exam and david scored 98

Z score for sam is (95-90)/5 = 1

Z score for david is (98-90)/5 = 1.6

As z score for david is more than the z score for Sam

So, David did better
