Question

The most produced chemical in the world (by weight and volumel) is sulfuric acid, H2SO4 Commercial production of H2S04 proceeds following the reaction mechanism below. Use this information to answer the next two (2) questions. step 1 step 2 Step 3 step 4 S(s) + O2 (g) →SO2(g) SO2(g) + Noag) → SO3(g) + NO(g) NO®) + ½ O2(g) → NO2(g) H2O() + S03(g) → H2SO4(aq) 10. (7 points) Which of the following correctly categorizes the components in this mechanism? SO2 SO3 NO intermediate NO2 a) catalyst intermediate product b) reactant catalyst product c) intermediate intermediate catalyst d) intermediate intermediate product e) product reactant intermediate intermediate reactant catalyst product intermediate intermediate catalyst

Answer #1

Three of the four components (SO2, SO3, NO) are intermediates of the reaction.

Because they are produced during the course of the reaction and they further react to produce other compound.

NO2 is catalyst as it takes part in reaction but again it is regenerated.
