Question

The next three questions pertain to the situation described below. A wheel of radius r 0.8 m and hub of radius r2 0.4m is shown in the diagram. Two masses are hung from the wheel-hub system. The mass m2, on the left, is hung from the hub. The mass mj is hung from the wheel. The system is in equilibrium. The moment of inertia for the disk-hub system is 1 = 1.34 kg m? mt1 m2 15) Which of the following statements are true: a. mim2 b. mi<m2 c. mi>m2 16) The mass m2 1.6 kg. What is the mass of my? a. m1-0.8 kg b. m1= 0.27 kg c. my -3.2 kg 17) If m - 0.88 kg is large enough for the system to rotate, when m-1.6kg, what is the magnitude of the acceleration of the mass m2? a. a -3.9 ms b. a- 0.37 mis c, a = 0.19 m/?

Answer #1

Given

r1 = 0.8 m

r2 = 0.4 m

I = 1.34 kg.m^2

15) m2/m1 = r1/r2 = 0.8/0.4 = 2

m2 = 2m1

So m2 > m1   (Option b)

16) m1 = m2/2 = 1.6/2 = 0.8 kg (Option a)
