You only want to use the minimum amount of hot solvent needed to dissolve your impure solvent because using any more than the minimum would negatively impact your percent yield of final product.

You want to cool the mixture slowly to ensure that little to no impurities get caught in your final product(which you want it to be as pure as possible)
