Figure Q3 shows (1) an straight shaft and (2) a stepped shaft. Both are made of steel having Su = 150 ksi and Sy = 90 ksi. Surfaces of the shafts are fine-ground. Varied torque T of 0 to 20x103(Ibxin) is applied.


 a) Estimate the S-N curve with 95% reliability under torsion loading.

 b) For the straight shaft, calculate the safety factor against infinite fatigue life with 95% reliability.

 c). For the stepped shaft, calculate the safety factor against infinite fatigue life with 95% reliability. (Use extrapolation of Figure 8.24 to get q if necessary)
