Question

The following 5 charges are arranged on the corners and the center of a square as shown. Evaluate the direction of the forces listed. Note that these forces are specifically the force of one charged object on a different charged object, not the force from all of the charged objects on another. If the force is zero, select No Force. +, - and 0 represent positive, negative and neutrally charged objects, respectively.

Label each question with one of the following choices:

left, right, up, down, left and up, left and down, right and up, right and down, or NO FORCE.

1. The force due to Object 3 on Object 1.

2. The force due to Object 2 on Object 4.

3. The force due to Object 1 on Object 4.

4. The force due to Object 5 on Object 4.

5. The force due to Object 4 on Object 1.

ANSWER

1.

Since 5 and 4 have same sign for charge, they will repel.
So force will be:
Up

2.

The force between positive(4) and no charge(2) is zero force - No force.

3.

Since 4 and 1 have different sign for charge, they will attract.
So force will be:
Right

4.

Since 5 and 4 have same sign for charge, they will repel.
So force will be:
Up Left

5.

The force due to Object 4 on Object 1: left.

6.

Charge 5 attract neutral charge 2 towards charge 5.
