Cyclohexanone was dissolved in a sample with 1 mL of 95% ethanol and a 1% solution of potassium permanganate was added. This resulted in a positive result for the test indicating that cyclohexanone did react with the potassium permanganate. When potassium permangnate reacts with cyclohrxanone, it forms adipic acid.

The balanced equation for the reaction of KMnO4 and cyclohexanol (C6H10O) will be :

C6H10O + H2O + 2MnO4 - ======>  C6H10O4 + 2 MnO2 + 2OH-
