Answer #1

Solution :

Question (15) Solution :

Given :

mA = 4 kg

ViA = 3 m/s

ViC = 0 m/s

Total momentum of the system : Ptotal = PA + PC = (mA)(ViA) + (mC)(ViC) = (4 kg)(3 m/s) + (mC)(0 m/s) = 12 kg m/s

Question (16) Solution :

Given :

mA = 4 kg

ViA = 3 m/s

ViC = 0 m/s

Vf = 1 m/s

Total momentum of the system : Pinitial = PA + PC = (mA)(ViA) + (mC)(ViC) = (4 kg)(3 m/s) + (mC)(0 m/s) = 12 kg m/s

Now According to Conservation of Momentum : Pfinal = Pinitial

Thus : (mA + mC)(Vf) = 12 kg m/s

(4 kg + mC)(1 m/s) = 12 kg m/s

4 kg + mC = 12 kg

mC = 8 kg
