Question

7. N20, is soluble in the solvent cyclohexane; however, dissolution does not prevent N204 from breaking down to give NO2 according to the equation N,04 (Cy) 2 NO2 (Cy) An effort to compare this solution equilibrium to the similar equilibrium in the gas phase gave the following actual experimental data: mo 0.190x10 0.686x10 1.54x10 2.55x10 3.75x10 7.86x10 11.9x10 NO2l (mol 2.80x10 5.20x10 7.26x10 10.4x10 11.7x10 17.3x10 21.0x10 a. Graph the square of the concentration of NO2 versus the concentration of N2O b. Compute the average equilibrium constant of this reaction.

Answer #1

Answer:

(a) The above plot is between [NO2]2 vs [N2O4].

(b) The equilibrium constant for the above reaction is K=[NO2]2/[N2O4]

[NO2]2=K x [N2O4] (y=mx)

The plot between [NO2]2 vs [N2O4] gives a slope=K (Average equilibrium constant)

Therefore from the plot, slope K=0.03743.
