The factory is trying out a new manufacturing method and wants to determine whether this new method affects the mean length of the metal rods.   

a. State the null and alternative hypotheses.

b. How many metal rods do we need to sample to obtain a margin of error of the mean length that is no more than 0.06 with 90% confidence?

c. Suppose 100 metal rods are sampled, what is the power of the test for detecting a change in the mean metal rod length for an alpha of 0.05, if the true mean length resulting from this new method is 3.35 meters? If the true mean length is 3.40 meters?

d. How large does the sample size need to be to test the null hypothesis with 95% confidence and 80% power?
