The first command $ echo cat causes the echo to display the three characters (c, a and t) on the screen.

The second command $ cat echo uses cat to copy the contents of the echo file to the screen. In order to complete the copy process the file named echo must be present. If there is no file named echo, then the cat will provide an error message.
