- If a gas-filled piston in a car engine does work on the surrounding engine parts, how does the internal energy of the gas inside the piston change?

- If your hot coffee sits on your desktop and loses 50kj of energy during cooling, what is the change of enthalpy of the coffee?

- Under what condition will the change in enthalpy equal the change in internal energy for a given chemical system?

Thank you so much!

Answer #1

If work done by the system on the surroundings. Then system lost some energy, so internal energy of the gas inside the piston decreases. So change in internal energy delta E = negative value.

Change in enthalpy of the coffee = -(amount of energy lost by coffee)

= - 50 kJ

If there is no work in the process then delta H = delta E

That means in isochoric process (at constant volume)

Enthalpy, Internal Energy and PV Work -Muvable piston Heating Coil Gas An electrical heater delivers 8.600 k) of energy (as heat) to a system consisting of the gas inside a cylinder having a movable piston. As a result, the piston moves against a constant external pressure such that P AV = 2.580 k). What is the change in internal energy for the system? Answer to the nearest 0.001 k). I would assume that I would have to boil the water again...but...
