The sound level at 1.0 m from a talking person is 60 dB. You are surrounded by five such people, all 1.0 m away from you and all talking equally loud at the same time. The threshold of hearing is 1.0x10-12 W/m2. What sound level are you being exposed to? You can neglect any absorption, reflection, or interference of the sound. Hint: log(A/B)= log (A)- log (B)

Answer #1

Solution :

Formula for Level difference is given by
Δ L (dB) = 10 x log (n)
Where n are the number of persons.

For n = 5 persons with the same loudness you get
Δ L = 6.98 dB
Δ L = 7 dB more than 1 person.

When 1 person has a sound level of 60 dB then
5 persons will have a total of 60 dB + 7 dB = 67 dB

    5. The threshold of human hearing at a frequency of 1.0 kHz is usually defined to be exactly 0 dB (for purposes of significant figures, consider this to be an exact, pure number). A research study shows that if exposed to 95 dB of a sound source for a long time, the threshold of hearing will shift upward to 32 dB. This accounts for why it is hard to hear normal conversations for some time after leaving a loud concert....
