A correlation is a numerical value that describes and measures three characteristics of an X and Y relationship. What are these characteristics? Describe the value of r = 0,89.
A correlation coefficient is a measure of the linear relationship between two variables X and Y. It is computed as:
Here Cov(X, Y) is the covariance between the two variables and
the SD(X) and SD(Y) are the standard deviations.
Note that it only gives the measure of linear relationship and not
the measure of other relationships like quadratic or cubic. It
ranges from -1 to +1 where -1 represents perfect negative linear
relationship and +1 represents perfect positive linear
relationship. A value of 0 represents no linear relationship.
A value of 0.89 is a positive linear relationship and as it is very
near to +1, this represents a strong positive linear relationship
which means that as the value of X increases, value of Y also
increases and as value of X decreases, value of Y also
decreases.

Which of the following best describes correlation? a.) Correlation measures the strength of the relationship between any two variables. b.) Correlation measures the strength of the linear association between two categorical variables. c.) Correlation measures how much a change in the explanatory variable causes a change in the response variable. d.) Correlation measures the strength of the linear relationship between two quantitative variables.

Which of the following statements about the correlation, r, between Y and X is NOT true? A. r measures the strength of the linear association between Y and X. B. r does not provide any information about the strength of non-linear relationships. C. r = 0 means there is no relationship between Y and X. D. Calculating r is not appropriate if the distributions of Y and X are skewed with outliers.
What is the critical value for the linear correlation coefficient, r, for a sample of size n = 15 with α = .01 ? (Round to the nearest thousandth. The linear correlation coefficient for a set of paired variables is r = .897. What proportion of the variation in y can be explained by the linear relationship between x and y? (Type the percentage rounded to the nearest hundredth without the % sign. The linear regression equation for a set...
Find the covariance and correlation coefficient for the following sets of data. Select the answers equal to or closest to your results. X: 50 44 47 40 54 Y: 10 13 95 7 Cov What does each measure tell you? Check all that apply. The covariance tells you that there is a weak or nonexistent linear relationship between X and Y The covariance and correlation coefficient tell you that there is a positive linear relationship between X and Y. The...

Type the correct letter in each box. 1. r = -.15 2. r = 0 3. r = 1 4. r = -97 A. a strong negative relationship between x and y B. no relationship between x andy C. a weak negative relationship between x and y D. a perfect positive relationship between x and y Note: You can earn partial credit on...
Bighorn sheep are beautiful wild animals found throughout the western United States. Let x be the age of a bighorn sheep (in years), and let y be the mortality rate (percent that die) for this age group. For example, x = 1, y = 14 means that 14% of the bighorn sheep between 1 and 2 years old died. A random sample of Arizona bighorn sheep gave the following information: x 1 2 3 4 5 y 15.8 19.3 14.4...

B) The correlation coefficient measures the strength of the linear relationship between two numerical variables C) A value of 0.00 indicates that two variables are perfectly linearly correlated D) All of these are true statements
