Two wave pulses are heading toward each other on a string. One pulse is "up" and the other is the exact same shape, inverted (i.e. "down").   At the moment the pulses cross the string is perfectly horizontal.   What happened to the energy in the wave?

Solution) When two wave pulses identical in shape but inverted with respect to each other meet at any instant destructive interference is formed . So the entire energy of the system at that instant is stored in the form of POTENTIAL ENERGY within it . After they pass each other they regain their original shapes.
