Sarah and Jennifer have just graduated from college at the University of Washington in Seattle and want to go on a road trip. They have always wanted to see the mile-high city of Denver. Their road atlas shows the driving time (in hours) between various city pairs, as shown below. Formulate and solve a network optimization model to find the quickest route from Seattle to Denver?

To solve this shortest path problem we shall use the network tree method.

Our objective is to go from Seattle to Denver.

Please find the image below that shows the path calculation. At every stage add the route distance in a cumulative manner.

From the network tree we can identify that the shorted path is

Seattle -> Butte -> Billings -> Cheyenne -> Denver

The total distance covered is 10+4+7+1 = 22
