A copper ore has been mined that contains 10 wt % soluble copper sulfate with the remainder of this stream an insoluble gangue. We wish to leach 12,000 kg/hr of this ore in a counter-current process, using water as the leachate. We wish to recover 95% of the copper sulfate in the overflow from stage one of this cascade. Calculate the required water feed rate for cascades with 1, 2, 5 and 10 stages. In all cases assumes that the underflow stream contains 25 weight % water on a solute free basis.

Copper ores rich in ultra-soluble sulfate minerals are leached using water. Finely grounded solid copper ore with 1000 kg/h, contains 20% CuSO4 (copper sulfate) and 70 % insoluble solids (Feed, F). The rest 10 % is contaminants and ignore their existence in your calculations. (Take only copper sulfate (solute) and solid content of the Feed.) The leaching occurs in a twostage, counter-current system using 3000 kg/h of water as pure solvent. The ratio of kg insoluble solid to kg solution...

A treated ore containing inert solid gangue and copper sulfate (CuSO4) is to be leached in a countercurrent multistage extractor using pure water to leach the CuSo The solid charge rate per hour consists of 9,000 kg of inert gangue (B), 1,200 kg of CuSOs (solute A) and 400 kg of water (C). The exit wash solution is flowing at 100 kg/hour and it contains 92 wt% water and 8 wt% Cuso.. A total of 97% of the Cuso,...
