Answer #1

The improve phase typically has the following steps

  1. Develop alternative designs: During this step solutions are designed to improve the parameters. This includes definition of modified input parameters, modified processes and analysis of improvement in the output along with the effort and investment requirement. The typical tasks in this activity are
  • Design and develop feasible solutions to improve the concerned parameter
  • Determine the operating limits of input variables
  • Perform cost-benefits analysis of the feasible solution

2. Quantitative evaluation of result: This activity includes validation and quantification of potential benefits realized by the improvement. Before the improvement is implemented in large scale, it is tested by controlled implementation in small scale. The outcomes are then measured for impact and benefits are calculated. Accordingly, based on the actual results of the pilot, the solutions are modified and tuned for large scale implementation. Typical tasks involved are as follows:

  • Plan and conduct pilot run to validate the improvement in terms of targets and achievement
  • Analyze the impact/ influence of solution on the other parameters / areas.
  • Measure financial gains quantitatively
  • Finalize and document the modification recommended

3. Implementation of improved solution: This activity involves horizontal deployment of the solution. Full scale deployment generally has lot of complexities and risks involved. Hence detailed change management plans and risk mitigation strategies are put into place. The steps involved are::

  • Develop risk mitigation plan and set-up  control systems and policies in place
  • Develop implementation road-map

Assume you recently accepted a job with a company that designs and builds helicopters for commercial and military use. The company has numerous contracts with the U.S. military that require the use of cost-plus pricing. In other words, the contracted price for each helicopter is calculated at a certain percentage (about 130 percent) of the total cost to produce it. Unlike the cost- plus pricing approach used for military contracts, the prices for civilian helicopters are based on the amount...

We were unable to transcribe this imager Engineenng eratures in the rim by around 313 K compared with earlier piston designs. The piston's steel skirt is much more rigid than the aluminum skirt in smaller deformation and allowing for designs with tighter clearances tin harmful exhaust emissions) from the piston. This design has been shown to reduce piston termn results in a more stable piston with less oil consumption (thus further r which are machined prior to welding. The process...
