A physicist goes "laser fishing" with a laser gun as shown in the diagram below. x = 2.0 m is the horizontal distance between the physicist and the point on the surface of the water where the laser beam hits. d = 3.2 m is the horizontal distance between the physicist and the fish. h = 1.8 m is the depth of the fish below the surface of the water. The laser cannon is 2 m above the surface of the water. Calculate the index of refraction of the water.

Isn't the refraction of water just 1.33 - 1.35?

A narrow beam of light from a laser travels through air (n = 1.00) and strikes the surface of the water (n = 1.33) in a lake at point A. The angle of incidence is 68 degrees. The depth of the lake is 3.0 m. On the flat lake-bottom is point B, directly below point A. (a) If refraction did not occur, how far away from point B would the laser beam strike the lakebottom? (b) Considering refraction, how far...

1 A horizontal cylindrical tank 2.20 m in diameter is half full of water. The space above the water is filled with a pressurized gas of unknown refractive index. A small laser can move along the curved bottom of the water and aims a light beam toward the center of the water sur- face (Fig1). You observe that when the laser has moved a distance S = 1.09m or more (rneasured along the curved surface) from the low- est point...

Problem 3:  Consider the situation in the figure - a student diver in a pool and an instructor on the edge, outside the water. Since the indices of refraction of air and water are different, the light rays coming from the diver and the instructor are refracted at the surface, changing their apparent position with respect to each other. The diver sees the instructor at an apparent angle of θa = 26°, measured from the normal to the interface. Randomized Variables:  θa...

Partner: Date Name 11 Snell's Law Introduction When light passes from one material to another it is always bent away from its original path. This process is known as refraction and the change in direction depends on the change in optical density (or refractive index) of the two materials. A larger change in refractive index results in a larger change in angle between incoming and outgoing light beams. A light beam bends closer to the normal in the material with...
