Scenario:  A reaction is taking place between sodium hydroxide and magnesium chloride to produce sodium chloride and magnesium hydroxide.

  1. Write the balanced equation for this reaction.

  1. If 50g of sodium hydroxide is being reacted with 4.30g of magnesium chloride, how many grams of magnesium hydroxide would be produced?  Show all calculations.
  2. Which reactant was the limiting reactant in the above scenario?
  3. Since the precipitation occurs in solution, to verify the amount of magnesium hydroxide produced, the solid would need to be removed from the solution.  Explain how this would occur and the steps necessary to ensure that the solid is ready to be weighed.
  4. After separating out the solid, you discover that you have produced 1.54 g of magnesium hydroxide.  What is your percent yield for your experiment?
  5. What is one potential source of error during this experiment?  Do not use “calculation error” as a reason for error.

Answer #1

One potential source in the error of getting less precipitated product is

on filtration we missed to take most of crude product and another it can be due to weighing balance as an experimental error .
