Suppose that a very large population of students has taken this same test on the internet. Their mean score was 7 and their population standard deviation was 4. Assume that there are 49 students in our statistics class and that these students can be thought of as a random sample from the same large population of students who took the statistics quiz online. Suppose that the mean quiz score for our class is 9. Now imagine that we draw many samples, each of size 49, from the population and compute the mean quiz scores for each sample. You can think of the samples as different statistics classes if that helps. What percentage of the mean sample scores will be between the 7 and the mean score for our class?

Suppose there is a population of test scores on a large, standardized exam for which the mean and standard deviation are unknown. Two different random samples of 50 data values are taken from the population. One sample has a larger sample standard deviation (SD) than the other. Each of the samples is used to construct a 95% confidence interval. How do you think these two confidence intervals would compare?

Students in a large college class took an exam and did poorly. The mean of the scores for the dass was 52 (out of 100), and the standard deviation was 11. The professor felt that the test may have been too difficult and decided to adjust the scores. She multiplied each test score by 1.3 and then added 7 to get the adjusted score. In other words, to obtain the adjusted score y from the original score x, she used...
