A piezoresistive accelerometer has a full scale of 100g with a full scale output of 100 mV. You have an 8-bit analog-to-digital conversion system with a full-scale input of 5VDC. You need to resolve the difference between a 5g and 10g acceleration, is this possible? Let’s assume that our A-to-D has the not just the ideal minimum quantization error but some additional noise, and say that we want to target an accuracy of +/- 1 least significant bit (LSB). How many bits of resolution is necessary on the AtoD for +/- 1 LSB to be less than 5g of acceleration in this case? If it needed to be less than 0.01g? Ignore the transducer noise floor for now.
