  1. Suppose you have a machine that executes a program consisting of 40% floating point multiply, 30% floating point divide, and the remaining 30% are from other instructions. Management wants you to make the machine 2x faster. You can make the multiply operation 10x faster OR the divide 4x faster. Can you meet management’s goal by making ONE improvement? If so, which one?

Answer #1

Given that Program instructions consists of :

  • 40% floating point multiply
  • 30% floating point divide
  • 30% other instructions

Amdahl's law states that:

Assuming initially that floating point multiply, divide and other instructions have same clocks per instruction (CPI).

New execution time after improvement with multiply = (40) / 10 + (30 + 30) = 64

New execution time after improvement with Divide = (30) / 4 + (40 + 30) = 77.5

New execution time after improvement with multiply and divide = (40 / 10) + (30 / 4) + 30 = 41.5

New system should be 2x faster which means new execution time should be below = 100/ 2 = 50.

Therefore, Management's goal can NOT be achieved by making the improvement with Multiply or divide alone. However it can be achieved by making both improvements at a time.

At the end of the program, store the answer and remainder to memory. Assume that the values are small enough so that all results fit into 32 bits. Since load delays are turned on in SPIM be careful what instructions are placed in the load...

As you know, a numeric type in C is only an approximation to the mathematical entity due to bit-size limitations. The goal of this lab is to deal with real problems caused by such differences. Along the way, you will also get more practice using loops. Recall that n! (read n factorial) is defined to be (1)(2)(3)(4)...(n-1)(n). Many useful computer science problems require the computation of C(n,k) (read n choose k) which is defined as: n! / (k! * (n-k)!),...

C++ HW Question Your program will simulate a simple change maker for a vending machine. It will start with a stock of coins and dollars. It will then repeatedly request the price for an item to be purchased or to quit. If given a price, it will accept nickels, dimes, quarters, one-dollar and five-dollar bills—deposited one at a time—in payment. When the user has deposited enough to cover the cost of the item, the program will calculate the coins to...
