If, while standing on a riverbank, you wish to spear a fish beneath the water surface in front of you, should you aim above, below, or directly at the observed fish to make a direct hit? When we observe the fish, the rays reflecting from the fish undergoes refraction at the surface of the water and air and bends at a certain angle. Thus the fish appears at less depth than the real depth of the fish. Thus we should aim below the observed fish to make a direct hit.

However, the laser does not undergo refraction and if we zap the fish with a laser, it would point the real position of the fish and we should aim directly at the observed fish.
