Answer #1

The gases does not travel in one direction because of countless number of collisions they undergo with other gas particles present in the surroundings. Since the average linear velocity is defined for single direction and the average speed is defined for over the period of time, and since the gas particles do not travel in the one direction due to collisions with other gas particles. Hence, the average speed of gas particles is unrelated to their average linear velocity as the gas particles travel in many direction over the period of time.

The particles are in thermal equilibrium but due to their complex interactions the velocity distribution function is not Maxwellian, but rather has the form: where C and vo are constants.
