A cannon, located 10.0 m from the base of a vertical 13 m tall cliff, shoots a 10 kg shell at 60.00 above the horizontal toward the cliff with 20m/s. If the cannon aimed at the target sits on the top of the cliff, would the cannon hit or missed the target? If not, calculate the vertical distance missed.

Answer #1

formula for range is

R = v cos theta * t

t = 10 m/20 cos 60

= 1 s

Apply kinematic equation

yf- yi = v sin theta* t + 1/2 * g t^2

yf - 0 = 20 sin 60 * 1s - 1/2 * 9.8 (1 s)^2

yf = 12.42 m

so cannon missed the target

the vertical distance missed is y = 13 m - 12.42 m = 0.579 m
