Scully and Mulder must speak with various informants about a UFO sighting that occurred in Kansas. The informants are all poor, middle-aged farmers who have little education and strong rural accents. It appears that they do not bathe very often, and they also have poor dental hygiene (many in fact are missing their teeth). Listed below are a number of perceptual biases and rater errors and scenario examples of how Scully and Mulder might be disposed to each of them when interacting with these people or evaluating the quality of their stories. Match each of the biases with the scenario example that best reflects that error. (There are no repeats. There are 8 examples of 8 biases.)
5. One afternoon, Mulder interviewed numerous people, one of whom reminded him of the actor Billy Bob Thornton. At the end of the day, he was summarizing his interviews to Scully over dinner. He seemed best able to remember what he was told by the guy who reminded him of Billy Bob Thornton.
6. Mulder thinks of farmers has having a strong work ethic and being very honest and forthright. Therefore, he is predisposed to believe everything that the informants tell him, even though the Sheriff has told him that one of the farmers is a known liar and a convicted criminal.
5. Availability Bias: Mulder's recollection of the details provided by the farmer who looks like Billy Bob Thornton represents that from all the interviews he did with the farmers he was able to recall the details of one specific.
6. Stereotyping: Mulder has a preconceived admiration for farmers as being forthright and honest which clouds his judgment of the facts and believes them.
