Currently, there are many organizations that use the S.M.A.R.T. objectives method when establishing personal performance objectives for their employees. SMART is an acronym for: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time scaled Based on your experience and from the assigned reading, do you believe that organizations should continue to use this method? Does it appear to be a beneficial or successful tool or should methods be modified to another system?

The SMART goals is explained below:

S- Specific: The goal needs to be clear and specific. In order to frame a Boundaryless organization specific goal and objectives has to be set, communicated and then leave it to the employees to achieve the same without setting any limitations or boundaries on how to go about achieving the same. The structure can be horizontal or vertical but with less set of rules and regulation.

M- Measurable: The set goals has to be measurable in order to evaluate the results.

A – Achievable: The agreements on to implement on the specific goal as whether it can be processed or not. The structure has to be formed in such a way that it eases the employees work and does not hurdle them.

R- Realistic: The process in which the resources, knowledge, work needs to be progressed to complete the goal. Only after knowing the purpose and objective of the organization the organization structure has to be framed. It should not be very complicated and should be realistic.

T- Time: The completion of achieving the goal on exact time. An organization structure has to be framed keeping in mind the time lines as to accomplishing the goals.

Yes organization should continue to use this method since it has proved to be successful tool reason being below:

  1. This SMART goal gives a structure to the strategic objective of an organization, without this structure employees and the management may not be clear on what they have to focus.
  2. Since it is measurable the success rate in achieving the objectives can be tracked and if the focus is moving elsewhere changes can be done immediately.
  3. Employees are clear on what is expected out of them which itself is a great motivation to work.
  4. Since the goals are realistic stress level at work would be less.
  5. For any activity there is a time bound which is clearly specified in the smart goals without which any project would be a failure.
