Remembering the story from chapter 7, about starting a business, called fr4g 4r3Na, to host PC gaming tournaments. In that case, you specified the networking equipment and infrastructure for each gaming room. Each of these gaming rooms will be a separate LAN.

Your task is to now specify the backbone network for the distribution layer that will connect the access LANs for each of the eight gaming rooms. This will enable teams in separate gaming rooms in the building to play against teams in other teams in the building, as well as to gamers in other gaming locations.

3. After running for six months you decide to make some changes that gamers have been asking for. The idea is to be able to create teams that are larger than will fit in a room, or that are not in the same room, while still keeping network traffic localized as much as possible to the team. Select the option that best solves the problem, while considering practicality, costs, and manageability. Explain how your choice will work.

a. Manually move patch cables for the team to the same LAN switch

b. Implement software defined networks through a virtual LAN

c. Create a separate hub with extra ports for this circumstance.

Answer #1

Solution:

The best option to solve the problem is:

Implement software defined networks through a virtual LAN

Reasons are:

  • Here the gamers are not permanent and the teams needs to be created on their demands, thus it may need to create teams by making common LAN each time.
  • If it performed manually, it is a time consuming process and the cable durability will also be affected, moreover it is not practical.
  • A software defined virtual LAN can establish group of LAN just by configuring from the software itself by preserving all the previous physical connections.
  • Here a virtual LAN set up is created so no physical cable movement and connections are required. Thus it is easy to manage any demand from gamers to create teams easily.
  • Creating separate hub with extra ports is both costly and practically infeasible, here also manual connections will be required.
  • Software defined virtual networks can perform all the required functionalities with less time. The set ups are temporary only thus virtual LAN based implementation will be more practical and manageable.
