Question 5:

  1. In a data set the coefficient of skewness is -0.23 and coefficient is 0.67. The data set is normally distributed or not? Explain why?
  2. If the coefficient of skewness is -2.56, what is the shape of the data set? Is it right skewed, left skewed or symmetric? Explain why?

Answer #1

Skewness is the degree of distortion from the symmetrical bell curve in a probability distribution. A value of zero means no skewness. Skewness can be measured using the below formula:

where, Sk2 is the Pearson's coefficient of skewness, Md is median and s is the St. dev.

(a) For a data set to be normally distributed, the coefficient of skewness needs to be zero or nearly zero. Since, the coefficient of skewness is -0.23, the data is left skewed and NOT NORMALLY DISTRIBUTED.

(b) Because the coefficient of skewness is highly negative (-2.56), the shape of the distribution is LEFT SKEWED.

Directions: The data shown in the following histograms come from students who took introductory statistics between 2002 and 2008 from a small institution in the PNW (not UWT, by the way). 1. For each data set, determine the variable type: qualitative (categorical) or quantitative. 2. For each data set, determine the level of measurement: nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio 3. Then describe the shape of each distribution using the terminology discussed in class: unimodal, bimodal, right-skewed, left-skewed, symmetric, or uniform....

Consider Meenu’s question in Peer Help: The course says that the oil consumption data set is skewed to the right. However, the graph at hand seems to have a skew to the left. Any clarification on this? Her classmate, Bryant, responded saying: When a graph is skewed to the right, it means that there is a longer tail on the right side. The bulk of the data actually sits on the left side of the distribution, but there are a...
