I'm collecting data on cricket stats, and attempting to find if there is a relationship between a player's batting average and the score they are chasing down. My population is the top 100 players. I am collecting my sample by starting at the #1 ranked player and selecting every 3rd player after that (i.e. #1,#4,#7...). Would you be able to tell me what this sampling method is and if this is an appropriate method to collect my data?

Yes, this is an appropriate method as it involves all kinds of players from best to worst. If we had chosen simple random sampling then it might have been possible that all the top playes or all the bottom players come in the sample. But with systematic sampling, this problem is ruled out.
