Both nitrogen and phosphorus belong to group 15 of the periodic table;thus, the same chemical and physical properties are expected for both elements. However, organic phosphines (R3P, R = alkyl or aromatic group) easily oxidize to phosphineoxides (R3P=O), while amines (R3N) do not. Why?

In phosphine oxide, phosphorus has formed 5 bonds and has 10 electrons in its valence shell.

These electrons are accomodated in 3s,3p and 3d of Phosphorus atom.

Similar compound is not possible in case of nitrogen because, nitrogen lacks d orbitalsin its valence shell, it has only 2s and 2p orbitals in valence shell. Hence, it cannot extend its valency to five.

Thus, amineoxides with formula R3N=O are not possible.
