Answer #1

Definition of G-LOC

G-LOC (G-force induced Loss Of Consciousness) is a condition in which a person loses his/her consciousness due to a prolonged exposure to excessively high G-forces. Under such extreme G-forces, cerebral blood circulation is drastically reduced.

The G-LOC continuum (or the G-LOC zone) is represented in the Stoll Curve in the image attached.

Components of an Anti-G Straining Maneuver (AGSM)

The two components of the AGSM are:

1.

A constant contraction at near maximum level, of all the skeletal muscles (including those in the

arms, legs and chest) and the abdominal muscles (and any other muscles if possible). Tensing of the

skeletal muscles reduces blood in the G dependent areas of the body and helps retain or

return the blood to the heart and the brain.

2.

The respiratory component of the AGSM is repeated at 2.5 - 3.0 second intervals. The

purpose of the respiratory component is to counter the downward G force by increasing chest

pressure by expanding the lungs. This increased pressure forces blood to flow from the heart to

the brain.
