Intellectual property and patent laws vary greatly in developing countries. How would you propose to protect our products in a developing country with a large population where the CEO of a generic pharmaceutical manufacturer states: “The US would grant a patent on a piece of toilet paper. Just because the US granted a patent doesn’t mean it should be valid in our country."

Answer #1

The statement of the CEO of a generic pharmaceutical manufacturer indicates a complete disrespect for intellectual property and patient laws. Thus, value-based approach won't be sufficient to protect the products in such a countries. Strict rules and regulations prohibiting disobeyment of these laws is required. A considerable amount of fine and legal action such as imprisionment for a specific period would help reinforce the laws in this case.
