I want to disable and turn off the Database service, Web service, Print service, Wireless service, sendmail service and their associated processes running on a Linux Red Hat Enterprise Server 5.5 64 bit? This server is being used as a DNS and Time Server only. Does killing the processes stop the associated service on this Server or vice versa?

The available commands I must use to carry out this task are:

kill -9<pid>

ps -A

chkconfig --list

chkconfig --level 3 <service name><on/off>

service <service name><start/stop>

How do I use these commands to disable and turn off the unwanted services and processes in the appropriate order. Please be specific and elaborate in your answer using only the given commands.

Thank you

Answer #1

All the services are stored in /etc/init.d and each process have three state start/stop/status as shown below cups process is for print

apache2 service is for web service
mssql or mysql service is for database service
iwconfig down will shut down the wifi service

find related services

Does killing the processes stop the associated service on this Server or vice versa?

Nope need to stop both else program codding can start either stopped

To stop and disable service following is syntax

systemctl stop service - Use it to stop a service. Does not persist after reboot

Below command will show the status of all the service

service --status-all
