Take the density of water as 1000 kg/m3 . Take the heat capacity of concrete as 900 J / (kgK) and the heat capacity of water as 4120 J / (kgK) .

(a) How much additional energy will the floor store if its temperature increases by sunlight by 10◦ C?

(b) How much additional energy will the water store if its temperature is increased by by sunlight by 10◦ C?

(c) Suppose a heater runs in the greenhouse during the night for 10 hours and it has a power of 1000 Watts. What is the total amount of heat produced by heater during a single night?

(d) Suppose the heater is run by burning coal which has an energy content of 24MJ/ kg (24 × 106 J/kg). How much coal is burned in ten hours? Assume the coal is essentially 100% carbon. (e) How much CO2 does this correspond to? Take the molecular weight of C as 12 and the molecular weight of CO2 as 48.
