Answer #1

When a value of a certain field is unknown, it is said to have a NULL value i.e. the ability to have any value at all. It is different from a blank or 0. A blank is used when a column value is not applicable for that particular relation. For eg: Consider a table Suppliers containing columns like Supplier Id, Name, Phone no, Fax no. etc. Suppose for a particular supplier you do not know the fax no. , then it will be filled with a NULL but if the supplier does not have a fax no, it will be left blank.0 is treated as an INT or DECIMAL value. Database engines have to provide support for NULL values , irrespective of the column data type, as different from 0, blank spaces or N/A.
