Africa gained independence in the 1960. This year is referred to as the year of Africa. This is because a series of events took place during the year. These events revolved around the independence of the seventeen African nations from Belgium, France and the United Kingdom. At the end of 1960, Africa had 26 independent countries opposed to just 26 in the beginning of the year.
