The differences of employees may be in the form of national origin, physical appearance, religion, education, age, gender, or sexual orientation. Now-a-days in the ever changing business environment, business owners are implementing a lot of diversity policies and strategies in order to appeal to their employees, clients, suppliers and vendors.Diversity in a work place is responsible for a lot of potential benefits as well as conflicts that are to be managed.
A policy is defines as a statement which states how human resource management issues will dealt with in an organisation. Now to ensure that the organisations are are meeting all legal obligations to follow the principles of workforce diversion the management has to develop and implement diversity policies (equal opportunity policies). A diversity policy enhances an organisation’s competitiveness and standing in the community, as well as helps with the staff satisfaction and morale. Any diversity policy must relate to all staff: permanent, part-time, casual and contracted.
Now while developing/ amending or improving any diversity policy one must consult with all stakeholders, senior management, contractors and employees. Consultation is very important as it ensures that the workforce understands the importance of the policy and why it has to be implemented. It also ensures that the policies are realistic and actionable in a daily basis. It helps in achieving more effective policies and also encourages the employees to follow them.
Since the policies are related to employee behavior it is very important to have the support of senior management. While management support for the policy is very important it is also crucial to get the feedback from the employees as it will be affecting them directly. Most of the relevant points of any diversity policy generally arises fro the employees themselves. The endorsement by the senior management or supervisors will also help with the employees to take the policies seriously. The senior management will also help in tailoring the policies in such a way as that it matches the needs of the company. It is very important that the policies are adapted to the workplace operations.
