As you dive down to check out a reef, the water exerts a pressure of 3 atm (2280 mm Hg), meaning that air is flowing out of the regulator at 3 atm. (3points) Given this,
a) What is the fractional concentration of nitrogen?
b) What is the partial pressure of nitrogen?
c) Assuming that your dive was instantaneous how has the rate of diffusion of nitrogen into your blood changed (both quantitatively and qualitatively)?
Please show work! :)
The nitrogen already present in the body from the surface and the nitrogen in the tank air are compressed by the increasing water pressure as the diver descends. The increasing pressure forces the nitrogen molecules close together to the point that they occupy less space. The diver's body fills the space left by the compression nitrogen by absorbing more nitrogen (also compressed) from the tank air. During this process the rate of diffusion of nitrogen is higher. The diver's body continues absorbing nitrogen until it is totally saturated. Once saturated there is negligible diffusion.

Name Dalton's Law of Partial Pressures - Many gas samples are a mixture of gases. For example, air is a mixture of gases. The gases dissolved in blood make up a mixture as well. In a gas mixture, each gas exerts its partial pressure (the specific pressure contribution of the gas to the total pressure of the gas mixture). Dalton's law states that the total pressure of a gas mixture (Pita) is the sum of the partial pressures of the...
The partial pressure of oxygen in the lung alveoli is a bit lower than in ambient air, being about 100 mm of mercury, or 0.13 Atm (it is lower than the partial pressure in air mainly because oxygen is continually taken up by the alveolar capillaries and carbon dioxide is continually released into the alveoli). In cell-free blood plasma (or a saline solution formulated to match key characteristics of blood plasma), which lacks red blood cells and therefore lacks hemoglobin,...
