Materials 200ml fine gravel; 200 ml sand; 200 ml soil, tap water; 250 ml beaker; 250 ml graduated cylinder; protractor: Exercise 2: Angle of Repose - In this experiment you will explore slope stability by constructing slopes of gravel, sand and soil, and measuring their angles of repose.

EXERCISE 2 POST-LAB QUESTIONS

  1. Which dry material had the greatest measured slope angle? Which had the least? Why do you think this was the case?
  2. Which material required the most amount of water for the slope to fail? Which required the least? Why do you think this was the case?
  3. List and discuss any natural sources that can give a slope greater shear strength.
  4. Aside from the results of this exercise, what other natural or manmade occurrences could cause a slope to fail?

Answer #1

Solution : Fine gravel will have the gratest measured slope angle .And soil will has the least. Reason: Because fine gravel will offer mre friction here and also due to its non regular shape it will be more nicely be packed. Sand due to round shape will fall over each other quickly and soil due to viscous nature and wet it offers very less friction.

Sand if wet offer greatest angle of repose. Reason:Because due to large amount of water first the compaction of the soil will increase and it offer high friction then adding more water will lead it to fail.

Natural source that can give more slope are Cocunut(shredded), Chalk ,flour(wheat) etc.

Manmade or natural occurance that can cause to fail are wind, spherical object ,rollers.

Hope you understand and like this solution.

Thanks.
