Ignoring twins and other multiple births, assume babies born at a hospital are independent events with the probability that a baby is a boy and the probability that a baby is a girl both equal to 0.5. If the first 5 children born are girls, what is the probability the next born child is a boy?

Answer #1

The events of baby birth are independent. Hence there is no relation in the probability of a baby boy or baby girl birth depending on the previous birth.

Even though the first 5 children born are girls, there is no impact on the probability of birth of baby for next occurance.

Hence probability that next baby is boy is 0.5

We considered a town with two hospitals. In the large hospital about 45 babies are born each day, and in the smaller hospital about 15 babies are born each day. We were interested in guessing which hospital would have on the average the largest number of days with the property that more than 60 percent of the children born on that day are boys. The probability of a boy being born is 0.5 For each hospital find the expected number...
