Considering the length of your resonance tube, what is the lowest frequency tuning fork you could use for this experiment? Show your calculations!

If the tubing is 25 cm long and we are at 20°C, we can solve for frequency as follows:

Tuning fork Frequency, Hz Length, L, Diameter of Tube, D λ = 4(L + 0.3d) Experimental v = f λ Room Temperature, °C

Answer #1

Theoretical speed of sound is given as = 342.9+ 0.6T ( here T is the local temperature )

Therefore speed of sound a 200 C is = 354.9 m/s

Now Length of tube is given as 0.25 m

In such a tube the longest wavelength is given by

given L=0.25 m and d=0.022 m we have

Therefore lowest frequency is given by

A resonance tube can be used to measure the speed of sound in air. A tuning fork is held above the opening of the tube and struck, while the far end of the tube is lengthened or shortened. Resonances (loudnesses) are heard at a series of tube lengths, L, which are carefully measured. resonance tube The speed of sound in air is determined by measuring the distance between two consecutive resonances.
